Medical reasons for circumcision can include conditions affecting the foreskin, such as phimosis (a foreskin that cannot be comfortably retracted), recurrent inflammation or infection, and other foreskin-related concerns. Before proceeding, a West-Med doctor will assess your medical history and individual circumstances, explain the procedure and discuss the potential benefits, risks and alternatives. Circumcision is a surgical procedure and informed consent is required before treatment. The procedure is performed using appropriate anaesthesia, with aftercare instructions provided to support wound healing and recovery.

At West-Med, circumcision begins with a medical consultation to determine whether the procedure is appropriate for you and to discuss your reason for considering surgery. Your doctor will explain how the procedure is performed, the type of anaesthesia that may be used, potential risks and complications, expected recovery and any alternative treatment options that may be appropriate. Following the procedure, you will receive clear instructions regarding wound care, hygiene, pain management, physical activity and when you can safely resume sexual activity. Follow-up care may be recommended depending on your individual circumstances and recovery.

Why is circumcision performed?

Is circumcision painful?

Anaesthesia is used during the procedure to manage pain. Some discomfort, tenderness or swelling can be expected during recovery. Your doctor will discuss appropriate pain management and aftercare with you.

How long does circumcision take to heal?

Healing times vary between patients. Your doctor will provide guidance regarding wound care, work, exercise and other activities based on your procedure and recovery. Complete healing generally takes longer than the initial period of discomfort and swelling.

When can I have sex after circumcision?

Sexual activity and masturbation should be avoided until the surgical site has adequately healed. Your doctor will provide guidance on when it is appropriate to resume sexual activity based on your recovery.

Are there risks associated with circumcision?

As with any surgical procedure, circumcision carries potential risks. These can include bleeding, infection, swelling, pain, wound-related complications and changes in sensation. Your doctor will discuss the relevant risks and alternatives with you before you provide informed consent.
