Crowns
Protect and restore damaged teeth with custom dental crowns
A dental crown is a custom-made cap placed over a tooth that has been weakened, damaged, heavily filled or significantly worn down. It is designed to restore the tooth's shape, strength and function while creating a natural-looking finish that blends with your smile. Crowns may also be recommended after root canal treatment or when there is not enough healthy tooth structure for a conventional filling. At West-Med Majik Forest, your dentist will first assess the tooth and discuss whether a crown is the most appropriate treatment for you. The final material and treatment plan will depend on the position of the tooth, the amount of remaining tooth structure, your bite and the aesthetic result required.
A considered approach to restoring damaged teeth
Your treatment begins with a dental examination to assess the affected tooth, surrounding teeth, gums and bite. Where necessary, X-rays may be taken to understand the condition of the tooth beneath the surface. If a crown is appropriate, the tooth is carefully prepared so the restoration can fit securely over it. An impression or scan is then used to create a crown that matches the required shape and bite. Depending on the treatment plan and laboratory process, a temporary crown may be fitted while the final restoration is being made. At the fitting appointment, the dentist checks the crown's fit, bite and appearance before it is securely cemented in place. Your dentist will explain the planned material and number of appointments before treatment begins.
Why choose West-Med Majik Forest for crowns
At West-Med Majik Forest, crown treatment is planned around preserving healthy tooth structure while restoring comfortable function and a natural appearance. Your dentist will assess the tooth carefully, explain the available restorative options and recommend a solution suited to the clinical situation. Particular attention is given to the crown's fit, bite and appearance before the restoration is completed. You will also receive practical guidance on cleaning around your crown and protecting it over the long term. If the tooth requires additional treatment before a crown can be placed, this will be discussed with you as part of your treatment plan.

WhatsApp UsDoes getting a dental crown hurt?
The tooth is normally numbed with local anaesthetic during preparation, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some temporary sensitivity or gum tenderness can occur afterwards and usually settles as the area recovers.
How long does a dental crown last?
There is no guaranteed lifespan for a crown. Longevity depends on the tooth, crown material, your bite, oral hygiene and habits such as grinding or chewing hard objects. Regular dental check-ups help monitor the restoration.
Will I need more than one appointment?
Crowns commonly require an assessment and preparation appointment followed by a fitting appointment once the final restoration is ready. The exact number of visits depends on your tooth and the treatment process recommended by your dentist.
Can a crown be placed on any damaged tooth?
Not every damaged tooth is suitable for a crown. The dentist must assess how much healthy tooth structure remains, the condition of the root and gums, and whether other treatment is required before restoring the tooth.
Will my medical aid cover a crown?
Dental benefits vary considerably between medical aid plans and dental options. West-Med can provide the relevant treatment information or quotation so you can confirm available benefits and any co-payment directly with your medical aid.
